We’re amplifying the heat this afternoon. The wind is acting like a conveyor belt, bringing in warm and moist air for the rest of the day. High pressure is centered off toward the southeast and the Tennessee River Valley. That is allowing a pull of warm, moist and unstable air from the Gulf of Mexico and the South Central Plains. Heat Advisories are in place Tuesday for the northern half of the viewing area.

All the way around, feels-like temperatures are easily soaring between 105 and 110 degrees. Local areas are flirting closer to 115 as a feels-like temperature. Any outdoor activities during the middle and late afternoon should be met with caution. Even light strenuous activities (e.g. light gardening or taking a walk around the neighborhood) should be taken seriously when it comes to potential heat ailments. Staying cool and hydrated is absolutely necessary for the afternoon! Keep animals indoors or in cooler locations during the day. Drinking plenty of water and applying sunscreen will be a wise choice as well.

We will continue to keep the heat in the forecast through Thursday. We’ll finally start to see a break in the warmth into the weekend. This is due to a frontal boundary system that continues to drape across the Northern Plains. By Thursday and Friday, the front will deepen slightly. With help from an upper-level low coming off of the four corners, we will build a small threat for some scattered showers and weak thunderstorms. This will help drop temperatures from the upper 90s to the lower 90s, where we’ll continue to linger through the weekend into the next workweek.
